Canterbury Public School’s Cooks River Big Ride

image4On the last day of summer term, over 60 Canterbury Public School students, staff and energetic parents took off for a three hour bike ride along the Cooks River cycleway from Canterbury PS to Steel Park Marrickville and back. The Cooks River Big Ride was the latest in a series of activities organised by the school to encourage students and their families to leave the car at home more often and cycle, scoot, skate or walk to school. Canterbury PS teacher and Ashfield Citizen of the Year, Kim Santarossa, who led the ride said “Research over several years shows that students who regularly walk or cycle to school are typically fitter and more alert and socialise more with their friends on the way.

Our Cooks River Big Ride was a fun, energetic way to celebrate the end of term. The weather was perfect and the River sparkled in the sun. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we plan to repeat the Big Ride again at the end of next term”.

The GreenWay has partnered with Bicycle Network and Observatory Hill Environmental Education Centre to develop the GreenWay Schools Active Travel Pilot Project. Four GreenWay schools have been involved over the past 12 months, Kegworth PS, Summer Hill PS, Dulwich Hill PS and Canterbury PS. Year 5 students have identified active paths to school as part of their Geography studies and the results will be incorporated in active maps for distribution to all families at the school. “Everyone enjoys school holidays when local streets in the Inner West have fewer cars on them at peak hour”, said Bicycle Network Schools Coordinator Alex Carpenter. “Our experience working with schools in Victoria shows that active travel rates can increase between 10 and 15% at schools participating in our Ride2School and active travel school programs. We’re hoping to see similar results in the Inner West as a result of the GreenWay Schools Active Travel Program”.
