Art Competition for young artists

Art Est Art School and Gallery is celebrating its 5th birthday with an art competition and exhibition open to all young artists from 16 to 25. Entry is free and there are some great prizes to be won including a bike, cash prizes, gift vouchers, art packs and more. Art works need to be on paper or canvas with the theme of five. Schools Program a winner!

The innovative GreenWay Primary Schools Sustainability Program won a NSW Planning for Children and Young People "Commendation Award" at the NSW Planning Institute of Australia Awards Ceremony at Walsh Bay on 13 November. The Award was sponsored by the NSW Commission for Children and Young People.
The GreenWay Primary Schools Sustainability Program was developed and piloted in 2011. It uses the GreenWay as an outdoor classroom to introduce kids to sustainability issues, local history and the urban environment. The project was developed by the GreenWay USP in collaboration with the four GreenWay councils, three GreenWay public schools – Kegworth PS, Summer Hill PS and Ashbury PS, and the NSW Dept. Education and Communities. The Program consists of 5 two hour local history and environment walks along the GreenWay and a 130 page teachers workbook full of great sustainability learning resources for use in the class room and outdoors. All the activities are linked to the stage 2 NSW primary schools curriculum. The Program has been accredited by the NSW Teachers Federation and a teacher training module has been prepared by the Observatory Hill Environmental Education Centre. Mosaic mural wins award!

The beautiful Hawthorne Canal Community Mural in the pedestrian tunnel from Kegworth Street, Leichhardt to the GreenWay won the 2012 "Public Arts and Place Making" Award from the NSW Local Government and Shires Association. The Award was announced at the Local Government Arts and Culture Summit at the Powerhouse Museum on 13/14th November.
Teacher’s Training Day

On Tuesday the 28th of August teachers from schools in and around the GreenWay catchment attended the GreenWay Teachers training day. The session was run by Pauline Dowd and Glen Halliday from the Observatory Hill Environmental education centre with a valuable contribution from GreenWay community stalwart, Nick Chapman.
The activity was contacted as a component of the GreenWay Primary schools Sustainability Program with the objective To encourage the use of the local environment and promote outdoor learning as a valued resource for teachers and a rich learning space for students.
The First GreenWay Primary Schools Education Training Day

Twenty-two teachers and trainees took part in the first GreenWay Primary Schools Sustainability Education training day at Kegworth Public School on Tuesday 28th August. The training was delivered by the Observatory Hill Environmental Education centre which recently secured accreditation for the USP funded GreenWay Education Project developed in 2011/12 by three GreenWay schools, the four GreenWay councils and representatives from the Dept. Education and Communities.
