The beautiful Hawthorne Canal Community Mural in the pedestrian tunnel from Kegworth Street, Leichhardt to the GreenWay won the 2012 "Public Arts and Place Making" Award from the NSW Local Government and Shires Association. The Award was announced at the Local Government Arts and Culture Summit at the Powerhouse Museum on 13/14th November.
The Award recognises the outstanding effort by community volunteers, local artists, Kegworth Public School, Sydney College of the Arts and 6 local GreenWay schools. The mural took 6 years to make and was officially opened in August 2011. It comprises a "story wall" describing the environment and local history of Hawthorne Canal, murals on the approaches to the tunnel painted by Kegworth PS, a stunning community mosaic containing 475,000 pieces and lighting.
The Mural has transformed a dingy, graffiti-ridden tunnel into a vibrant and safe pedestrian link between Leichhardt and Haberfield. Grafitti and tagging has dropped by 95% since the mural was completed. It was coordinated by community volunteers and funded by Leichhardt Council, RailCorp and the GreenWay USP Project. The mural has set the bar high for public art along the GreenWay ...... watch this space!
